  • About the Issues Forum

    What is the Issues Forum?

    The Southern Education Foundation’s Issues Forum is SEF’s signature biennial convening, bringing together education leaders, practitioners, policymakers, researchers, scholars, and advocates to explore the most critical issues shaping education opportunity for students across the South. From early learning through higher education, attendees gain insights, share research and best practices, network with peers, and collaborate on strategies to advance education justice throughout the region.

    When and where is the Forum?

    The 2025 Issues Forum will take place November 4 – 6, 2025, in New Orleans, LA. Check our full agenda here.

    • Kickoff Reception, Tuesday, November 4
      The Tate, Etienne, Prevost (TEP) Center, New Orleans
      The TEP (Tate, Etienne, and Prevost) Center is a renovated mixed-use facility housed in what used to be the historic McDonogh 19 Elementary School in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans. Once central to the New Orleans school desegregation crisis of the 1960s.

    Who should attend?

    The Forum is ideal for education leaders, practitioners, policymakers, researchers, scholars, and advocates, and anyone committed to education opportunity in the South.

    What is the theme of the 2025 Forum?

    The theme is Miles to Go: The Road to Education Justice, with a sub-theme of Confronting the Past, Navigating the Present, and Shaping the Future of Education.

    Will sessions be recorded or available virtually?

    The 2025 Issues Forum is an in-person convening. Select sessions may be recorded and made available post-event.

  • Registration & Participation

    How do I register?

    Registration is open online here. Early registration (9/1) is encouraged as space is limited.

    What is included with my registration?

    Registration includes access to all plenary sessions, breakout discussions, networking events, and digital Forum materials. Meals and special events may vary; see the agenda for details.

    Are scholarships or financial assistance available?

    A limited number of scholarships may be available. Please contact forum@southerneducation.org for eligibility and application instructions.

    What is the dress code?

    Business casual attire is recommended for all sessions and networking events. Comfortable shoes are advised for walking between venues.

    Are meals provided during the Forum?

    Some meals and receptions are included with registration (see agenda for details). Attendees are responsible for other meals.

    Weather in New Orleans

    November in New Orleans is typically mild, with average highs in the low 70s and cooler evenings. Pack layers and a light jacket.

    Getting to the Venue

    • Airport: Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport (MSY) is approximately 16 miles from the venue.
    • Ground Transportation: Options include rideshare apps, taxis, and shuttle services.
    • Transportation from the airport: Approximate rideshare/taxi cost to downtown: $30–$40.
      • Airport shuttle services can be pre-booked.
      • Streetcar passes are available for local travel (great for sightseeing).

    Hotel & Accommodations

    A hotel room block is now open. Secure your accommodations at the group rate and stay steps away from all the action in New Orleans. With a stay at New Orleans Marriott Warehouse Arts District, you’ll be centrally located in New Orleans, steps from Ernest N. Morial Convention Center and within a 10-minute walk of Caesars New Orleans Casino. This luxury hotel is 0.6 mi (0.9 km) from The Shops at Canal Place and 0.6 mi (1 km) from Canal Street.
